FIGURE 7

Interaction and signaling model for M. elongata and Burkholderia. The nature, timing, specificity, and direction of signals are indicated in the lower panel. Findings included within show that there are at least two ordered signals exchanged, first involving the secretion and utilization of fungal organic acids by bacteria and second the secretion of an undescribed factor by Burkholderia which stimulated fungal growth. Specificity refers to the ability of close relatives to induce similar morphological shifts, see Tables 2, 3 for more details.
