The red gastrocnemius fibers with distinct perinuclear Golgi complex staining are type I. RG fibers were double-stained for GLUT4 (gt) and SERCA1 (srca), the Ca2+ ATPase of type II fibers. Two fibers are shown. One (arrow) is positive for SERCA1, which identifies it as a type II fiber. It has no distinct perinuclear pattern for GLUT4 on its surface. The other fiber (arrowhead), which is negative for SERCA, shows a distinct perinuclear GLUT4 staining. Scale bar, 50 μm.
