Dim background light selectively suppressed rod input. Flash responses of a green cone to 500 nm test flashes (274 photons μm−2) were recorded in the following three conditions of adaptation: dark-adapted (solid line), in the presence of a 500 nm background light of 160 photons μm−2 sec−1(dashed line), or in the presence of a cone-matched 660 nm background of 24,070 photons μm−2sec−1 (dotted line).Traces are averages of 8–22 responses. Bandwidth, DC–10 Hz. Flash duration was 10 msec. The flash monitor is shownabove the voltage traces.
