C. gattii cda3Δ displays severely attenuated virulence in CBA/J and C57BL/6 mouse models of infection. (A) CBA/J mice (6 to 8 weeks old, female) were infected intranasally with 10⁵ CFU of each strain. Survival of the animals was recorded as mortality of mice for 80 days PI. Mice that lost 20% of the body weight at the time of inoculation were considered ill and sacrificed. Data are representative of two independent experiments with five animals for each strain. (B) C57BL/6 mice (4 to 6 weeks old, female) were infected with 10⁴ CFU of each strain by intratracheal inoculation. Survival of the animals was recorded as mortality of mice for 50 days PI. Mice that lost 20% of the body weight at the time of inoculation were considered ill and sacrificed. Data are representative of one experiment with 10 animals for each strain. Virulence was determined using Mantel-Cox curve comparison with statistical significance determined by log rank test. P < 0.0001 comparing strain KN99 with cda3Δ strain.
