Figure 5:
(A) ApoAI staining in kidneys from a control patient (adult kidney donor), a patient with minimal change disease (MCD), and a patient with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). (B) higher magnification showing localization of apoAI in the proximal brush border in the FSGS sample. (C) Fluorescent staining colocalizing apoAI with megalin, which is specifically expressed on the brush border of proximal tubules. The colocalization is especially prominent in the proximal tubule brush border of patients with FSGS compared to MCD (arrow). The MCD patient shown had urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) of 656.4 mg/g, urinary apoAI to creatinine ratio of 0.008 ug/mg, and serum creatinine of 0.57 mg/dL (GFR>100) while the FSGS patient had ACR of 588.5 mg/g, urinary apoAI to creatinine ratio of 1.538 ug/mg, and a serum creatinine of 0.57 mg/dL (GFR>100) in measurements closest to the time of biopsy.
