TOPIC: MEASLES IS A SERIOUS DISEASE.
Key Message Measles is a highly infectious disease that affects the nose and throat. It can have serious consequences.
Evidence #1 Most people recover from measles without complications, but it can be more dangerous for infants, adults and pregnant women.
Evidence #2 The complications of measles can include pneumonia, premature labour and low birth weights.
Challenges & Uncertainties While we know that some groups of people are particularly at-risk for complications, we can’t predict who will have serious complications from measles infection. We also can’t predict how many susceptible individuals will be affected by this outbreak. That’s why individual measures to prevent the spread of measles are so important.
Personal Action The best way to protect yourself against measles are to:
• Ensure your immunizations are up-to-date;
• Cover your coughs and sneezes;
• Keep common surfaces clean and disinfected;
• Stay home when you’re sick; and
• Perform hand hygiene frequently either by washing your hands with soap and water thoroughly or by using alcohol-based hand rubs.
