Scheme of how DNA methylation of either promoter or SE can affect target gene expression. Methylation at the promoter region prevents the expression of a gene, regardless of SE methylation. Genes can be minimally expressed with an unmethylated promoter, even with a methylated SE region, but maximal gene expression is reached with both an unmethylated promoter and an unmethylated SE.
