Increase in DNA damage in the cerebellum and hippocampus of aging G6PD-deficient mice measured by the comet assay. Cells were obtained from the hippocampus and cerebellum and prepared and visualized as described in the Methods. Upper pictures depict representative “comet tails” resulting from DNA single strand breaks (SSBs) in single cells from each brain area and genotype. Lower graphs represent for each G6pd genotype the mean olive tail moment, or amount of SSBs, for 3 samples in each group. Statistical analyses were performed using Student's t-test. Asterisks indicate a difference from wild-type G6PD-normal mice for the same brain region (*p < 0.05, **p < 0.01).
