CD8+ T cells upregulate the expression of CD1d on their surfaces upon the recognition of cognate antigens (1). iNKT cells interact with CD1d on antigen-recognized CD8+ T cells to become activated (2) and to further stimulate CD8+ T cells in turn (3). CD8+ T cells reach the optimal level of activation and downregulate CD1d expression on the cell surface (4)
