The effects of aging on bone are independent of estrogen status in mice. Mice were either sham-operated or ovariectomized (OVX) at 5.5 months or 19.5 months of age. Six weeks after the surgeries, the mice were euthanized. Femoral cortical thickness and cortical porosity were measured by μCT in the midshaft and the distal metaphysis, respectively. Cancellous bone (bone volume/tissue volume [BV/TV]) was measured in the 5th lumbar vertebra. Boxes depict values from the 25th to 75th quartiles, the middle line depicts the mean, and the vertical whiskers show the 10th and 90th percentiles; values outside this range are plotted as dots. n = 9 to 10; *p < 0.05 by two-way ANOVA.
