The impact of screening prioritization and stopping criteria on meta-analyses. Difference in meta-analysis results for the largest meta-analysis in each systematic review using a combination of stopping criteria (displacement (0.01) OR relevant (n = 15) OR found/effort (1/1000)). Ten systematic reviews did not include any meta-analysis based on three or more studies (in PubMed) and were therefore excluded from the results. Effort denotes the fraction of candidate references screened. Recall denotes the fraction of identified relevant studies. Blue data points correspond to the simulated results using early stopping. Red data points correspond to results without early stopping, i.e., equivalent to current practice (which would have 100% effort and 100% recall)
