(A) After mating, the gravid females lay egg batches on the edge of wounds, the main infestation sites of humans represented in pink. (B) After hatching, the larvae undergo three stages of development as they feed on blood and wound exudates, and aggressively destroy the living tissues. (C) Mature third-instar larvae evacuate wounds and burrow into soil where they pupate (D) and later emerge as adults (E).
