Direct and indirect effects in the core parts of the networks of the plankton food web in the Gulf of Naples (Italy). Nodes–nodes effects are based on the WI index. Plankton webs refer to oligotrophic, or blue, and eutrophic, or green, states (a, b, respectively). Core parts were defined following previous authors (Daily et al., 1993; Ortiz et al., 2013). Nodes are species or groups of species as indicated in Table 1; different colors (as in Figure 3) indicate the membership of nodes to different modules; nodes' size is proportional to the absolute impact of a node on the web; black and red links are direct and indirect effects, respectively. The yEd graph editor (yFiles software; Wiese et al., 2004) was employed to visualize these networks
