A comparison of the percentage of adults aged ≥18 (with 95% confidence intervals) who
sought health information and accessed health information without frustration during
their most recent search, by source of health information, Health Information National
Trends Survey (HINTS), 2008-2017, United States.20 Accessing health information without frustration is defined as responding
“strongly disagree” to the question: “Based on the results of your most recent search
for information about health or medical topics, how much do you agree or disagree with
the following statement? You felt frustrated during your search for the information.”
Response options were measured on a 4-point scale, ranging from 1 = strongly disagree
to 4 = strongly agree. All HINTS respondents were asked, “Have you ever looked for
information about health or medical topics from any source?” Those who responded yes
were asked, “The most recent time you looked for information about health or medical
topics, where did you go first?” Response options for this item included various
information sources (eg, books, brochures, cancer organizations, family, friend,
coworker, physician or health care provider, internet, library, magazines, newspapers,
telephone information line, or unconventional practitioner); responses were
dichotomized as internet vs other.
