RL and ASE using the silk protein opal. Schematic showing that the integration of an inverse opal to a silk film with optical gain can induce RL or reduce the threshold of ASE. The same spectrum of ASE can be observed from the bulk silk film. For most area of the SIO, ASEs with reduced thresholds are observed. However, the RL can be only obtained when the locally disordered area yields a resonator with a high-quality (Q) factor.
