The results of a numerical experiment where we compute ∂I/∂τice using the correct surface temperature but the atmospheric temperature profile from 14:30 local time using data from the Mars Climate Database, which simulates the effect of our assumptions in estimating a temperature profile for the retrievals. Each plus sign shows the computed fractional error in ∂I/∂τice while the red bar is the average error for each local time. At the latest local time observed by THEMIS (19:30) the error in thermal contrast (and thus in the retrieved cloud optical depth) is rarely greater than about 5% and never greater than about 10%.
