Showing: Teach by example
  • Role‐modelling: Make and enjoy healthy choices within view of child

Supporting: Help children feel good about themselves
  • Encourage: Notice and make encouraging comments when child makes a healthy choice

  • Respect child's feelings: When limiting a child's behaviour, accept that the child may express negative feelings

Guiding: Offer choices within limits
  • Can do: Give 2–3 choices of what child can do, rather than what s/he can't do

  • Decide together: Involve children in making food decisions by coming up with their own options to try

  • Divide responsibility: Provide healthy foods and let children decide what and how much to eat (Satter 2008)

Shaping: Make healthy choices easier
  • Improve availability of healthy foods at home

  • Create healthy routines: Develop family routines that support healthy eating

  • Find solutions with other adults: Work with other adults at home to overcome barriers to healthful child eating
