(A) Upon decrease of the H-bond strength (via different substituents at the para-position of the ketimine) the free activation barrier of the E-I ⇌ E-II process for pathway A (H-bond switching) is reduced. (B) Theoretical calculations of the transition state of the H-bond switching show a bifurcated H-bond corroborating the experimental observation of a H-bond strength dependent process.
