Task design. Each trial started with an instruction screen of 2s, displaying a cue for each experimental condition: Red arrow pointing upward symbolized Increase, video camera symbolized Look and green arrow pointing downwards indicated Decrease. The instruction was followed by an emotion regulation phase in which either an IAPS picture or a film clip was presented, depending on the run. During this 8s phase, participants were asked to either upregulate (Increase) or downregulate (Decrease) their emotions or not modulate their emotions at all (Look). In the next display, participants were asked to rate their current emotional state on a scale from −5 (very negative) to +5 (very positive), followed by a jittered fixation phase of 4–8s.
