Model construction. The sources comprising the ‘core face network’ are connected with forward/backward connections as shown. OFA, occipital face area (inferior occipital gyrus); FFA, fusiform face area (fusiform gyrus); STS, superior temporal sulcus. Three different models were constructed within this neural architecture. (A) Model 1 has only intra‐hemispheric forward‐connections projecting from bilateral OFA to FFA and STS; (B) Model 2 shares the same intra‐hemispheric structures with Model 1, but has extra interhemispherical forward‐connections from OFA to contralateral FFA; (C) Model 3 has fully forward‐ and backward‐connected sources at the intrahemispheric level.
