Stimuli and experimental design of the main experiment. A: Participants viewed photos of three object exemplars in four categories: objects, scenes, body parts, and faces. B: Schematic drawing of the visual stimulation conditions. Participants were presented with stimuli either left or right of a central fixation square. C: Stimulus presentations (duration 4 s) were interleaved with periods of a gray background screen with a variable duration of 2–6 s. During the whole experiment, participants were instructed to fixate a central square. During stimulus presentation, the fixation square was white. At the end of a stimulus presentation, the central fixation square turned red and opened left or right every 1,000 ms (open 800 ms, closed 200 ms).
