VirX1 is a natural broad specificity flavin-dependent halogenase with a remarkable preference for iodination. Unusually, it is from a cyanophage (a virus known to infect abundant oceanic cyanobacteria). Structural characterisation, and enzyme kinetics across a range of sterically and electronically different aromatic substrates are reported.
