Timing of the brain growth spurt during development in humans and rats. In the rat (scale is measured in days), the brain’s growth peaks after birth, whereas in humans (scale is measured in months), the brain’s growth peaks at birth. Growth is measured as a percentage of adult weight. As brain growth slows, continued growth in the rest of the body causes the brain’s weight to become a smaller percentage of total adult weight.
