Respondents to the 1993 General Social Survey (in Canada) who consumed alcohol were asked whether their drinking had adversely affected their social life, physical health, happiness, home life or marriage, work, or finances in the previous 12 months.

Heavy-drinking occasions were defined as consumption of five or more drinks on one occasion.
