For each Phecode, all the ICD-9 codes associated with it are mapped to their CUIs (concept unique identifiers). Next, all the strings associated with the CUIs in UMLS metathesaurus are identified. These strings are used to search all the titles, abstracts and keywords in the PubMed database to identify the counts of academic research papers associated with each phecode.
