Meaning or reasons behind specific elements or rituals Mentioning the function of specific elements or items involved in día de los muertos. Asking or giving a reason behind any of the rituals involved in dia de los muertos (i.e. visiting the cemetery) “Why an “ofrenda” is set at grandmother’s house and not at her house?”

“Why do we go to the cemetery?”
“That they are placed on dia de los muertos so that when they(dead) come they will see that we received them with flowers and candles.”

“To remember the dead”
Non-corporeal continuity Mention of spirits or the death relatives coming back or still being around that does explicitly make a religious reference (e.g. God or Heaven). “Where do they (dead) go? “ “Because every year the dead(souls) come for what we offer them”
