Reactions of methylglyoxal in water solutions. MGO can be transformed into lactic acid by glyoxalase activity of DJ-1 (Equation (Eq.) 1), or it can react with cellular thiols to form hemithioacetals (Equation 2). It has also been suggested that DJ-1 can catalyze the hydrolysis of hemithioacetals according to Equation 3, although this was not confirmed in the present study.
