β-Glucuronidase enzymes reactivate estrogens. Gut microbial β-glucuronidase enzymes within the GI deconjugate estrone-3- and estradiol-17-glucuronides to the aglycones estrone and estradiol, respectively. This reactivation allows unbound estrogens to be recirculated through the bloodstream, possibly contributing to a variety of hormonal disorders, including breast cancer and endometriosis.
