(A) Two neighboring colonies of A549 cells have very different morphologies. The left represents an islet of contacting cells with a morphology intermediate between epithelial cells and fibroblasts. The cells of the right colony are strongly elongated. These cells have classical fibroblast morphology and have increased motility. (B) Colony of A549 cells with prominent ‘fibroblastic-migratory’ morphology. (C) Colony of A549 transfectants, having a shape of an islet of epithelioid cells. The edges of the islet are formed by special ‘marginal’ cells. (D) Colony of A549 transfected cells, consisting of an islet of epithelioid cells. (E) Senescent cells in the colony.
