Schematic of study design. Dogs were confirmed to be infected with L. infantum and provided a full clinical examination to generate a clinical score for each animal before placement into treatment groups. A group of 6 dogs did not receive medication (untreated), while all other animals received allopurinol therapy orally at a dose of 20 mg/kg, once each day, for 90 days. A group of 8 dogs received allopurinol therapy alone (allopurinol); 8 dogs were additionally subcutaneously injected with the Leish-F2 + SLA-SE for a total of 6 doses, with a 3 week interval between each dose (Allo plus Leish-F2 + SLA-SE). Dogs were monitored throughout and full evaluations conducted to yield clinical scores.
