Figure 6

Automatic system for acquiring large-scale scanning electron microscopy images. Epoxy blocks of mouse cerebral cortex are sectioned at 70 nm, mounted on a substrate, and subjected to electron microscopy. Approximately 600 fields of view (0.25 mm2 total) are automatically and continuously taken at 5000× with a field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and one unified image is produced by image processing. Red rectangle including the cortical surface and white matter indicates the automatic acquisition area. Red broken lines and arrows indicate the direction and sequential order of automatic acquisition of electron microscopic images.
