Electrostatic interaction between positively charged chitosan molecules and negatively charged lipopolysaccharides (Gram-negative bacteria) and teichoic acids (Gram-positive bacteria) may lead to the blocking of intra/extracellular exchanges or even cell wall disruption and, finally, leakage of cytoplasmic content.
