Diagrammatic representation of a T. denticola periplasmic flagellum. The periplasmic flagellum is made up of three parts: a basal body, hook, and filament. The flagellar hook (FlgE) connects and transmits torque produced by the motor [rotor (FliF, FliG, FliM, and FliY) and stator (MotA and MotB)] in the basal body, to the flagellar filament which then rotates. Diagram was adapted and modified from Limberger (2004).
