Potential molecular responses of affected cells to the presence of asbestos. When cells are exposed to asbestos, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) will lead to alteration of DNA methylation and microRNA (miRNA) expression/processing, resulting in cell apoptosis or epigenetic alterations that allow cells to progress to diseased states.
