Schematic overview of the different EET mechanisms that have been proposed for the uptake of electrons from a cathode or Fe(0) by acetogenic bacteria (adjusted from Philips et al., 2019). Previously proposed EET mechanisms are direct (A), mediated by dissolved redox mediators (B), depended on H2 generation by a syntrophic partner with a direct mechanism (C), or depended on H2 generation catalyzed by extracellular hydrogenases (D). The last mechanism (E) is proposed and elaborated in this work.
