Direct and indirect methemoglobin (Met-Hb) formation after H2S exposure. Activation of the NADPH oxidase (NOXs) systems or inhibition of mitochondrial respiration can result in H2O2 formation in white blood cells. The diffusible H2O2 can cross the red cell membrane and induce methemoglobinemia.
