Participants |
520 women in the first or second trimester of pregnancy were recruited to the study in the USA. Women were excluded if they were in the third trimester of pregnancy, had an anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder and other specified psychiatric disorders. |
Interventions |
Hypnosis (Cheek method) involving problem solving, brief psychoanalytical‐based psychotherapy. Participants attended five sessions. The control group received supportive psychotherapy. |
Outcomes |
Need for augmentation, caesarean section, newborn resuscitation, epidural anaesthesia, use of analgesia and maternal emotional experience during birthing. |
