Each closed circle represents climate means from a single weather station. Matched island (Santa Catalina Island) and mainland (Santa Ana Mountains) field sites are indicated by a blue and red star, respectively, in each figure. Despite their proximity and similar mean annual climates, island and mainland field sites are on opposite ends of the temperature seasonality spectrum, with the island site experiencing lower summer and higher winter temperatures (i.e. a more maritime climate). Inset in Fig. 4a shows the study region within the state of California.
