Proposed biosynthesis of asparasone A in A. flavus. Pks27 assembles the linear nonaketide from an acyl started unit and eight malonyl units. Cyclization and release from the PKS affords the anthrone. The anthrone is oxidized to the anthraquinone and one ketone moiety reduced by unknown enzymes that are predicted to be similar to those in the aflatoxin biosynthesis gene cluster.
