The vasa nervorum is derived from adjacent blood vessels. After entering a nerve, the vessels form anastomoses at intervals throughout the course of the nerve, reinforcing the blood supply within the epineurium. Where a considerable interval between the supplying nutrient vessels occurs, there will be a natural “watershed” region susceptible to ischemia.
