Callose deposition assay. 4–5-week-old lettuce (A) or Arabidopsis (B) plants were syringe-infiltrated with a 1 × 108 CFU/mL bacterial inoculum (S. enterica or P. syringae) or water. Callose deposits were enumerated and bars represent the mean (n = 12 ± SE) number of deposits per mm2 of leaf obtained from four different leaves and the assay was repeated three times. Statistical significance among the means was determined by one-way ANOVA with post hoc Tukey HSD (p < 0.05). Different letters above the bars indicate statistically significant differences. Images on the right show typical deposit patterns after each treatment.
