Fig. 3 — Autophagy plays a pivotal role in adipocyte differentiation and maturation whereas during metabolic syndrome obesity further triggers autophagic activity. Adipose-specific deletion of autophagic genes such as Atg7, Atg5, Beclin 1 and pharmacologic inhibition (chloroquine) of autophagy, reduce excess fat accumulation and induce browning of white adipose tissue.
