Phylogenetic overview of larval feeding habits in mosquitoes (Culicidae). A cladogram is modified from Reidenbach et al. [10] for illustrative purposes. Pie charts indicate the proportion of species belonging to a given subfamily or tribe that are classified in the literature as detritivorous, facultatively predaceous or obligately predaceous. Branches marked with a dagger (†) represent clades in which at least one species is known to normally require a living gut microbiota for development. The clade of interest in this study (Toxorhynchitini) is marked with an asterisk (*).
