Light microscopy image of chewed almonds; note randomly selected areas within the parenchyma tissue of a nut were used to quantify the proportion of ruptured (circled) cells. In this figure, there are 126 cells total and an estimated twenty-two cells are ruptured. Hence, the proportion of ruptured cells is 17 % (i.e. 22/126 = 0·17 × 100 = 17 %).
