Methods Randomised controlled trial. 
 Allocation by coin toss. 
 Unblinded outcomes assessment.
Participants 82 low‐income mothers (87% Hispanic) with children aged 10‐47 months.
Interventions I: Home visit, with safety teaching, brochure, free smoke alarms, involving mother in installation and maintenance of alarms. 
 C: No intervention.
Outcomes Home inspection 1 month after intervention: 
 1) Final functioning alarms. 
 2) Functioning alarms acquired.
Notes Loss to follow‐up: I: 7.3%; C: 2.0%.
