Allocation by independent researcher using computer generated random numbers, in blocks of 8.

3428 families with children aged <5 years, recruited from caseloads of 62 health visitors. |
Interventions |
I: Structured, individualized 20‐minute safety consultation; free or discounted alarms; alarm installation for low income families.
C: Usual care. |
Outcomes |
Medical record review; postal questionnaire to 1000 subjects per group at 12 & 24 months:
1) Medically attended injuries.
2) Injury hospitalization.
3) Final functioning alarms. |

No loss to follow‐up for injury outcomes. Response rates at 12 months: I=78%; C=76%.
Response rates at 24 months: I=82%; C=76%.
