Chronic alcohol exposure decreases GABAergic signaling while increasing CRF and neuroimmune signaling. Neuroactive steroids may restore homeostasis by increasing GABAA receptor-mediated inhibition, and decreasing CRF and deleterious neuroimmune signaling, all of which contribute to the etiology of AUDs.
