Diet-induced obesity and high-fat diets. (A,B) Comparison of mice receiving either a grain-based diet (A) or a diet enriched in fat (B) for prolonged times. While the body weight of the mice receiving a control diet was 25 g, the mouse fed a diet enriched for the same time was 52 g. (CF) In obese animals, excess fat deposition and ectopic fat accumulation in the body occurs (C,E). In addition, the liver size is much higher in animals that received a diet rich in fat compared to animals at same age fed a grain-based diet (D,F).
