Methods Randomised controlled trial. Randomisation was based on date of admission 
 Analysis not ITT
Participants 45 patients with blunt trauma who required colloid infusion. Patients were excluded if they were less than 12 years old, did not require admission to the ITU, died within 24 hours, were pregnant or in renal failure 
 8 gelatin and 6 HES patients excluded after randomisation
Interventions 1) HES (200/0.45 Pentaspan) (n = 24) 
 2) Gelatin (Gelofusine) (n = 21) 
 After 24 hours, colloid administration was at the discretion of the clinician
Outcomes Death 
 Glasgow coma score 
 Volumes of blood and platelets infused 
 Haematological parameters
Notes Data were collected until the patient left the ITU or for a maximum of 5 days. Main outcome of interest was capillary leak
