Methods Randomised controlled trial. The doctors giving the fluid were blinded to the solution but blinding of outcome assessors not mentioned. Loss to follow‐up not reported
Participants 45 consecutive trauma patients transferred to the surgical ICU. Inclusion criteria: injury severity score of > 15 points
All patients were haemodynamically stable before being admitted to the study
Interventions 1) 10% HES (n = 15)
 2) 20% HA (n = 15)
 3) Unspecified volume therapy regimen (n = 15)
The allocated solution was given to maintain CVP and or PAWP between 12 mmHg and 18 mmHg
Outcomes Death
 Haemodynamic variables
 Circulating adhesion molecules
Notes Deaths were reported within the study period and later (left ITU). Information on allocation concealment was obtained on contact with the study author
